Before Spring (Upstate New York)

From 2000-2002 I lived in Thailand working with Burmese refugees in the camps that lined the Thai-Burma border. From 2006 – 2009 I returned to work in Thailand a handful of times. On one trip I returned to the town I lived in, Mae Sot, to visit my good friend and his family, Ton Buasri. Here, iridescent fields of young rice outside the town await the nurturing rain.

In contrast to the fertile fields of rice, above, the searing, arid farmland of southern Afghanistan (Kandahar Province, Spin Boldak District) on the Pakistan border. Picture taken from the window of a CH-16 helicopter. This was my primary means of transportation between meetings I periodically attended at Kandahar Airfield and my work assignment in Spin Boldak.
